A high DeFi APY is one of the easiest numbers in crypto to notice. It is also one of the easiest numbers to misunderstand.
A pool advertising 80%, 100%, or even 500% APY may look dramatically better than a pool offering 6%. But APY is not a complete description of the risk or durability of a yield opportunity.
The more useful question is simple: where is the yield coming from?
Incentives can create temporary APY
Many DeFi protocols use token incentives to attract liquidity. These programs can be effective for bootstrapping a market, but the resulting APY can change quickly.
If a reward token falls in value, emissions are reduced, or liquidity arrives faster than demand, the displayed return can decline sharply.
That does not make incentive-driven yield automatically bad. It means the reward should be treated as a variable component rather than assuming it is permanent income.
Trading fees can also be volatile
Liquidity pools can earn fees when users trade against them. Strong trading activity can therefore produce attractive returns.
But trading volume is not constant. A market that generates substantial fees during a period of volatility may produce much less when activity declines.
This is why historical APY behavior matters. A single high reading cannot show whether the return is durable.
High yield can come with weaker liquidity
Some of the highest-yield opportunities exist in relatively small markets.
That creates a potential trade-off. The advertised return may be attractive, but shallow liquidity can make entering or exiting a position harder and can increase exposure to price impact.
TVL alone is not enough to establish safety. Researchers should understand what assets make up the liquidity and how the market behaves under stress.
The reward source matters
Consider two pools with the same 30% APY.
One might generate most of its return from lending demand. The other might generate most of it from newly issued incentive tokens.
The headline number is identical. The economic structure is not.

Watch how the grade changes
A useful risk signal is not only where a pool sits today, but whether its assessment is changing.
A pool that moves from B to F after its reward structure changes deserves a different research response from a pool that has remained B across many snapshots.

Don't confuse a grade with a guarantee
A high or low grade is not a prediction of future returns.

It does not eliminate smart-contract risk, governance risk, oracle risk, asset risk, or other risks that require protocol-level investigation.
A better way to evaluate high-yield pools
Before considering a high-APY pool, ask:
- Is the APY stable or recently inflated?
- What percentage of the return comes from incentives?
- How deep is the liquidity?
- What assets are in the pool?
- Has the pool's grade changed recently?
- What happens if the incentive program ends?
These questions turn a headline APY into something you can actually research.

High APY is not automatically a red flag. It is a reason to investigate.
The most useful yield research looks beyond the headline and examines the conditions producing the return. When those conditions are temporary, the yield can disappear just as quickly as it appeared.
